The new square doubles the old one

The Square becomes the central pole of the city and it plays an important representation role in front of the Palace. The compositional theme of the square is the use of straight arms connecting them perpendicularly, which determine squares and courtyards, where stand out the bulk of the Palace and that of the Castle. The structure was renewed and painted by Federico Zuccari at the beginning of the 17th century and connected to the bishop’s palace from the 16th century. It contains houses the ducal picture gallery, begun by Emanuele Filiberto to exalt the characters of the royal house of Savoy. In the last quarter of the 1600s the square doubled, opening towards the Po, beyond the ancient gate, then transformed into the residence of the Duke and next in the Palace of Madama Reale.

The Theatrum Sabaudiae shows the transformation of the Piazza using three great perspectives: two with the square closed between Palazzo Ducale and the walls and the third with the square opened towards the Po.
