The ancient grain market
Before the expansion of the walls of Barbarossa, the area of Piazza Banchi was beyond the walls, just outside the Porta di San Pietro. The area was first dedicated to the grain market, which was grown nearby. Subsequently, the area became the crossroads for the money changers who carried out their business here.
