In 1328 the square was devastated by a terrible fire and only in the sixteenth century the restoration of its buildingswas completed with the construction of the Loggia dei Mercati designed by Vannone, intended to give a covered seat to the bankers and money changers in the area. In 1855 it became the seat of the first Stock Exchange in Italy.
