The hill of Castello, where the original nucleus of the pre-Roman settlement was placed and where up to now there have been one hundred generations of Genoese, falls to the sea to the east. The houses that in time were situated on the steep slope, have stopped only where the terrain is missing on the cliff. Even today the old town, unique among the big cities, offers a view from the outside, resting on the walls as on a pedestal.
the photo, from Google earth, shows the section of the walls with the ancient city overlooking above and the edge of roads and docks that separates it from the water today, once very close.
