Of Gianfranco Procacci
The program of completion of the sea walls, in the sixteenth century, acted on a city much larger than the one enclosed by the walls of Barbarossa. It also defended every access from the sea next to Carignano hill, in addition to that of Castello, which dominates the sea to the east, towards the Bisagno stream.
In the image (1880): in the foreground the walls of the Grazi and, those of the Marina up to the base of the hill of Carignano. The bell towers of the skyline from the left S. Maria di Castello, S. Maria in Passione, dome of the Assumption.
