The Red Pond

On the Pian Perduto there is the Red Pond, whose depth does not exceed the meter. The color of its waters varies from gray to yellow, but during the summer it assumes a red-violet color caused by an alga called "Euglena sanguinea". A legend linked to the phenomenon of the color of the pond tells that a fairy, while she was painting a rainbow, made some red paint fall on the fields below and consequently a red lake was formed that was visible only under certain conditions.

Pian Perduto is formed by numerous depressions and sinkholes which, in the snow melting season, turn into small ponds; these, with the progress of the summer, dry up completely.
