The hole in the face

Above the plateau, with an easy excursion of two hours, you reach the attack of the rocky walls of Monte Granero, the "Hole in the Face", or Traforo delle Traversette, the first tunnel in living memory. At almost 2900 meters of altitude, it connects Italy to France with a 75-meter tunnel (originally 100) built on the orders of the Marquis of Saluzzo in 1480, to facilitate an important "salt path" that linked the two sides, was admired for the ingenuity of the excavation techniques, for which the fire was used to calcinate the stone and make it more friable (as advised since ancient times). Open only in the summer months, the hole has long been closed and is now reopened and maintained by various associations and contributions.
