The castle of Theatrum Sabaudiae

From the engraving of the castle of Agliè contained in the Theatrum Sabaudiae and the precious volume designed to illustrate the beauties of the Duchy of Savoy to the European courts, it is possible to understand that the Castellamonte’s drawings envisaged the realization of a much more complex structure than the one actually performed. Six large towers-pavilions, connected by the same number of extensions of the building, should have delimited a double installation with two internal courtyards. In effect, from the building overlooking the garden, there are two long tunnels that contain the courtyard of San Massimo. The court is open to the village of Agliè, the only partition is a one-floor building with a portico.

The castle of Agliè in the representation of the Theatrum Sabaudiae. This probably corresponds to the project idea of Amedeo di Castellamonte, which is wider and more important than what has been achieved.
