At the beginning it was a fortress

Tradition has it that the order to build the palace arrived in the twelfth century by the marquises of San Martino, one of the most ancient and powerful families of the Canavese area. The fortress was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the centuries-old medieval disputes. However, some documents from the sixteenth century prove that, at that time, the castle preserved the foundations of the fortress and, around its tower, it was surrounded by a moat and some houses.
