One of the entrances to the railway gallery is located halfway down Via di Porta Soprana, and was used as a garage after the World War. In October 1942, when the American bombing raids on the city began, this became an access to a disused railway tunnel, located over 20 meters below street level, used as an anti-aircraft shelter. The rush to enter following the air alarm and the steep and long stairs generated a collective fall of those seeking refuge, with over 500 dead.
The photo (1960) shows in the foreground the garage obtained from the access to the Galleria delle Grazie. In the background the towers, intact after the bombings of the war which caused thousands of deaths in the historic center.
