On the evening of October 23, 1942, like the evening before, the anti-aircraft alarms went off and people headed towards Galleria delle Grazie. It was the best refuge: a long abandoned railway tunnel, 30 meters underground, at the bottom of a steep staircase of over 250 steps. According to the official story, someone stumbled and fell, creating a domino effect that killed about five hundred people. An even more tragic version of the story reports that the entrance gate to the air-raid shelter was closed and people panicked and pushed, killing those who were in the front rows.
