The chains of Pisa

Also to Porta dei Vacca, as was the case in Porta Soprana, had been hung the chains thaht the port of Pisa took after the battle of Meloria. In 1846 the chains were returned. Later, in 1843 Van Loon painted this scene, published on FB by Renata Pittaluga. Here we finally begin to see the artificial additions applied to the towers during the previous centuries, of which we mentioned earlier. We see hanging the chains of Pisa but we can not guess the purpose of the strange frame posts on the right tower.

Painting of 1843 by Pieter Van Loon and published by Renata Pittaluga on Facebook
