In the 1860s and 1880s, Ukrainian theatrical art was in its flowering. There was a circle of lovers of Ukrainian stage art, founded by I.K. Tobilevich, but there was no permanent room where rehearsals or performances could be held. After the abolition of serfdom and the emergence of an amateur professional circle headed by M.L. Kropyvnytskyi and I.K. Tobilevich the idea of building a theatre was closer. In 1865, engineer-colonel Georgy Vasylovich Trambytskyi bought a plot of land from the city administration for 76 rubles, on which he built a building - the Winter Theater - with his own funds.
