After the 17th c. the Russian Empire implemented a series of reforms to the Orthodox faith, a schism led to the creation of a community of religious who preferred to exercise ancient practices. Many of them emigrated to remote places in order to continue to profess their faith. Bila Krynytsia is one of the most striking examples, as it is an ancient centre of these communities. The village itself was built by them and its approximately 170 current inhabitants are what remains of the representatives of the Orthodox Church of the Old Believers. People sought salvation outside the Russian Empire. One of the most hospitable areas was the modern Bukovina region.
