The relic, whose origin is open to debate, has a very complex history dating back to the sixteenth century. What is known is that the House of Savoy bought the Shroud and after much wandering decided to finally move it from Chambéry to Turin, the new duchy capital, in 1578. The first exhibition of the Shroud was also organised that year. For this purpose a new chapel was built inside the Dome, next to the Royal Palace. The Shroud was kept here from 1694 for over 300 years. Since 2018 the relic has been placed back in public display after many years of restoration of the damages caused by the 1997 fire.
