The head tunnel

The head gallery (30 m wide and 150 m long) is built in 1866 without any interruption of the underneath railway trafic. The supporting structure is composed by 33 trellis trusses with a knee-profile, transversally placed. Mazzucchetti had assimilated his mentor's teaching which underlined the importance of the union between architecture and building sciences, as well as the new design themes requested by the railway constructions, particularly in the english and french culture of that time.

The image shows the assembly phase of the big metal ribs on service bridges and mobile scaffolds.
