In the thirteenth century the church was enlarged and raised. Above the arches of the aisles the wall is extended and opened with large mullioned windows, which lighten the view and weight of the structure. The walls were frescoed, still visible in the highest part, which has not been altered by the seventeenth-century decorative apparatus later removed by D'Andrade. Anyway, only a few traces remain, given that in part they were lost in the collapse of the roof following the bombings of 1943.
The intervention with the holes along the wall is called "false Women's gallery", since it reproduces the windows of the matroneo, the walkways reserved for women, located above the side aisles in the ancient basilicas.
