He was born in a poor Cossack family on December 3, 1722. He graduated from the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, went as a singer to the Imperial Choir in St. Petersburg. He lived abroad for several years (Poland, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Italy). From 1750 to 1751 he taught poetics at the Pereyaslav Seminary in Ukraine. Then from 1753 to 1759 he was a home teacher, and from 1759 to 1769 - a teacher of poetics, Greek, syntax and ethics in Kharkiv. Skovoroda was a composer and author of many liturgical songs. He died on November 9, 1794.
