The rediscovered icehouses

Already present in an eighteenth-century plan, they have in good condition the original structure of cone-shaped masonry with a splendid cupola. The ice was formed by cramming the snow in the underground rooms through drains open on the roof. The inclined floor drained the ice-melting water. In place of the old glaciers, was built a large helix tunnel system, which is still used, as a refrigerated warehouse for the market, the entrance of which is in the street Orfane 32.

The glaciers that occupy the central part of the "Palafuksas" are just some of the many "cold rooms" that the market area had for centuries.
