Piazza Maggiore in the mid-1500s was already equipped with porches and commercial fronts, of the noble buildings to the East and South, of the relationship with the wide road of the new Borgo (the current via Matteotti) that characterizes it today. Even the flagpole of the banner was positioned as now in view of the Castle. Unlike today, a canal ran instead of the present via G.Negri, separating the city from the Castle, which was connected by a single bridge, along the axis that crosses Piazza Maggiore up to the Porta Vecchia.
The Lonigo map confirms that the center's plant, founded on the Maggiore and Legna squares, has remained intact since at least 1500.
