Son of Aimone, known as the Pacific and Iolanda of Monferrato, Amedeo VI was born in Chambery on 4 January 1334 and played an important role in the Savoy household for his qualities as a statesman and commander who also transpires from the animosity with which he is represented in monument of Piazza Palazzo di Città . The name of Conte Verde is due to the color of the weapons and the banners with which he sided in the tournaments of chivalry that he used to love. During the annual tournament, organized in Bourg-en Bresse in May 1353, twelve knights participating in the game had presented themselves dressed in green and accompanied by twelve ladies also adorned with green cloths. Amedeo, distinguished in the duels, won the kiss of the ladies as a reward and from that day decided to use green as the dominant color in the furnishings and tents of military camps, making it also on the sails of ships that led him to the Crusade in the East.
