The Academy of Sciences

The brick building originally designed for the Collegio dei Nobili (a Jesuit educative institution) was partly addressed in 1783 to the Academy of Sciences, a prestigious european institution born in 1757 (Ludovico Quarini was charged of the project). Particularly noteworthy are the big library and the decorated vault of Galliari. Over more than 200 years, the building received some illustrous characters such as Alessandro Volta, Enrico Fermi, Guglielmo Marconi, Alessandro Manzoni... In the 19th century, with the completion of the right wing and some transformations by Giuseppe Talucchi, the space was reorganised to accomodate the Egyptian Museum and the Galleria Sabauda which was transferred in the new wing of the Palace Reale during the first years of the 21st century.

The picture shows the building in the closing years of the twentieth century with its height exceeding that of the other buildings. All the parked cars disappeared in the early 2000s thanks to the pedestrianisation plan.
