The square birth between the Court and the Clergy interests

Differents players with opposite interests participated to the creation of the square. In 1679, the Jesuits were able to edificate the three big blocks between Piazza Castello and Piazza Reale (San Carlo). Their ambitious project provided for enormous and majestic buildings and a church in Piazza Castello, in front of the Palace Madama, which would have given prestige to the religious order and the Madama Reale. This caused some deep disagreements with the Romans who opted for a more sober seat. In 1680 the prince of Carignano's offer put an end to the diatribe : he offered to buy some of the Jesuite lots to create a square in front of its palace (under construction).

The 1685 map shows the ducal buildings and the three Jesuits blocks.
