The arcades of Piazza San Carlo

Piazza San Carlo arcades are rectangular. Its twin columns give a sense of lightness and radiance. After the eighteenth-century debate about the thin columns stability, in 1764 Benedetto Alfieri was given the task of filling the space between the columns with brick pillars. The Palladian tondos were closed by embossed decorations, which compromised the harmony of the original project.
