On the tombstone of Francesco Cirio is written that "with initiating faith, with arduous energy / between joys and sorrows / aroused / victorious fortunes for Italian farmers / teaching new trades, new ways, new markets". In 1867, starting from a market stall and a warehouse in Borgo Dora, he managed to store in tin cans vegetables and fruits, by applying a French method but by deriving an innovative way of selling the packaged foods now affirmed worldwide, building an empire that few associate with Turin.
