Giuseppe Cottolengo was born in Bra in 1786 and he was ordained a priest in 1811. After the closure of the Volta Rossa, he began the very work: the Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza, in Zona Valdocco. Giuseppe Cottolengo expanded the building with a lot of rooms. Thanks to the opening of the San Vincenzo's hospital, more of 200 poor and sick people were accepted, because they had been refused by the other hospitals. Far 5 years to the foundation, the Institute was able to accomodate about 1000 people.
