Why "Carlina"?

The square perpetuates the nickname of Carlo Emanuele II, who in the popular slander was Giaco fomna (effeminate). The nickname was given to the young Duke, perhaps because he remained so long under the power of his mother, the "Madama" Cristina, a very centralizing and energetic ruler. Once the mother died and assumed power, the Duke played an extraordinary role as a reformer in all fields, including promoting the development of the city towards the Po and widening the walls.
