Pigments were traditionally extracted from herbs, leaves, berries and flowers using specific preparation methods. Red was extracted from cherry juice; green from various herbs; blue from some varieties of flowers. Various shades of yellow were obtained from sunflower petals, onion skins, and the bark of honey seedlings. The pigments were diluted with egg yolk or milk and fixed with cherry sap or sugar beet. Synthetic colors appeared much later, gouache and watercolor painting began to be used only in the postwar period. Painting tools were also of natural origin: paintbrushes were made of tree buds, stems of marsh herbs (especially rushes and bulrushes) and cat hair.
