For over 200 years, the practice of Petrykivka painting has spread to Ukrainian families, many of whom have at least one practitioner. In popular beliefs, paintings protect against adversity and evil, and its representations also have a symbolic value: yellow represents fire and spiritual awakening; birds the light, harmony and happiness. The legacy of this decorative art helps to keep the historical and spiritual consciousness alive and defines the identity of the entire Ukrainian community.
